What does /sci/ think about this? Any PHD mathfags out there?
Most of the internet (online calculators, including google's, and math related sites and yt channels) says it should be 9 regardless of whether there's a multiplication symbol or not before the parenthesis.
Also, me and my scientific calculator agree with pic related.

I argue it should be similar to 6÷2y where you find out y = 3. You don't divide by 2 first.

The calculator parses 6÷2(1+2) as
(6) ÷ (2(1+2))
The implied multiplication makes 2(1+2) behave like a distinct term. It is not treated as a multiplication of two terms. This may or may not be seen as a flaw, you need to understand the system you are using.
In this system, if you mean for 2 and (1+2) to be separate terms, you explicitly write the multiplication sign between them.

if we say that 1+2 is x, then right now you have
6/(2x) = 1
(6/2)*x = 9
these are two very different calculations, so the online would be wrong

It should be 9 in both cases. TI-nspire cx cas gives 9 in both cases. Taking it to the (6*(1+2))/2 form automatically. To make it equal to 1 you would have to change it to 6/(2*(1+2)) which is contrary to what math classes teach all over the world, so yeah 9 is the answer.
