I never really took my time on google scholar to see studies about it. But just look at https://www.16personalities.com/insights, its purely empirical data. There are traits that is way more prevalent in some types than others, obviously it would be more predictive than random guessing.

When you run such a survey in a venue like this instead you find that it's some absurdly massive fraction slanted INTJ/INTP, who together are less than 5% of the distribution in the general population, and those types are your carbon copy description of hacker/autist/genius/savant that you'd expect to congregate in places like this. And that correlation holds fucking everywhere you run the same experiment.

ENTP here. I have no problem with MBTI. It's a mental model that has a number of dimensions, which is more more complex and nuanced than how most people perceive the concept of personality. It is flawed, but so is literally everything else, and it's a pointless, self-serving action to kill an idea in its infancy instead of either giving it the chance to grow or at least providing an alternative. Or perhaps even less, saying something original and funny that isn't the usual regurgitation.

There may be something there, especially if you learn about the functions. At the same time, I do wonder how much we are only choosing masks that society tailors rather than some inherent collection of traits. I can convince myself into any one of the types, which isn't a counter argument, but definitely serves as a weakness. Still, I tend towards being optimistic that the theory can be honed, and it's one of many that I enjoy keeping track of.

As someone who works and interacts with a number of various personalities, this is far from truth. If you go outside, you may meet some mature people of various personality types, especially those Sensors you hate for no real reason. As a "Rational" I realize I have my flaws, and a lot of those flaws are rightly mediated through cooperation with those who differ from me. After all, our existence is largely gifted to us. I did my dissertation on personality and exam result correlation.

Was really fun but I went of on a tangent and ended up doing reading of philosophers.

Anyway imo it's just very limited. Forced choices that fundamentally group people.

..which is something we all know.

Its unlike other normal aptitude exams in that the person taking the test doesnt know the correct answer.

The whole argument is for nothing as life is often just forced choices.

It has low consistency (people taking the test multiple times in a set period of time often end up with different types). The choice in hypothetical dimensions like thinking / feeling or sensing / intuiting is wrong because they have correlations with each other / aren't actually independent. It also makes the bad assumption there are discrete categorical distinctions (e.g. you will be classified as either thinking or feeling) when in actuality there is no evidence of bimodal distribution in MBTI types and most people score towards the middle and have more in common with those closer to them but in the opposite category than they do with those in their same category.
And even the US military won't touch it:
>In a recent review of the MBTI, commissioned by the Army Research Institute, it was concluded that the instrument should not be used for career planning counseling.13 The Institute's analysis of the available research showed no evidence for the utility of the test. Indeed, with respect to career planning they note that "the types may simply be an example of stereotypes."

You can arbitrarily draw lines in sand and divide people into groups and think it simplifies categorization of general behavior. Personality tests have no meaning if it can't be used to predict anything about how a person with a certain score will behave. MMPI-2 is statistically valid and can be used to predict things like job satisfaction. MBTI shows no predictability; MBTI-based job placement results in same productivity and job satisfaction as random.

If you're a fucken dullard, you can either think it's an essential readout of your nature, or you can decry it as not, either way you're missing the point: yes it's a grid drawn on an ocean, but it's useful when you're trying to get the best out of thousands of people at a time and time is a factor.
IQ and personality tests get aces in places this week, not in 6 months or a year. The corporation or army that can quickly get your number and put you somewhere useful will do better than the one that doesn't.

INTP here, scored off the carts for Intuition. I could kind of game the test a little, but the more co-operative you are the more useful the results are to the personnel or HR departments.

I like the MBTI but I have a hard time juggling those ideas with psychiatric disorders.

I bet a good understanding of both in a standardized concept like a ten diagram, were overlaps could be looked at, would help better evaluate mental health.

I just can't see how curing a person's avoidant personality disorder with drugs, then tapering them off, and seeing a change from introversion to extroversion would not contradict mbti. Unless I don't understand the concept well, I thought MBTI was a set in stone kind of thing.

It isn't. Its just a vague way to cluster people, theres probably a lot of overlap between the "independent" functions. But its still fun to read a bit about it, makes way more sense than horoscope, which makes none at all.
