There no reason to assume it isn't obscenely hard for early life to survive and prosper, remember we've had several near total extinction events where life was almost eliminated completely. And that's just what we know of, early earth was far more chaotic.
There's no reason to assume intelligence arises as quickly on other planets as it did here. It's an especially energy-heavy evolution that isn't always as immediately helpful as one may think for most animals, sure it made us the rulers of our planet eventually, but we still lived for hundreds of thousands of years as prey species to dumber animals before we made technological strides. We went billions of years and only had one intelligent species with the digits to do anything about it arise, there's no telling how rare the trait is.
There's no reason to assume that sufficiently advanced species don't destroy themselves eventually as we have and continue to get close to, if you believe the more paranoid of us.
There's no reason to assume it's easy for life on other planets to leave their planet, if earth was just a little bit more massive achieving shuttle lift would be obsenely harder. Also many star systems may not have as many "jumping off points" as we do with things like the moon and mars, making setting up a spacefaring society even harder.
Also you're not comprehending how grotesquely massive the universe is, sure there's absolutely life out there but it has so many hurdles I wouldn't be surprised if we were the only surviving life in the milky way.
