Do you have a Master's? Most people do a continuation of their masters thesis as part of their dissertation. If you are entering with a bachelor's to masters or PhD program, most schools will have you do lab rotations the first year to figure out what you like. Often times your PI will give you a couple options for a dissertation topic and you choose accordingly.
