Basically maths is seen as the supreme subject from grade school onwards and the best way to make it to the top because one of the only two main paths to the top schools is to be good at maths. It probably was Napoleon that started it, idk, but it really was a widespread understanding in the early post WWII era, when the country was said to be run by technocrats from Polytechnique and the ENA.
