If I have a/b = c, I can multiply both sides by b to get a by itself.

Ex. 6/2 = 3

Multiply both sides by 2, and I get 6 by itself:

6 = 3 x 2

But what do I do to get b by itself?

I want to get 2 = 6/3

What do I do to both sides to get that?

Multiple by the reciprocal of the numerator, so in your example it is 6, so multiple both sides by 1/6

a/b = c
(a/b)^(-1) = c^(-1)
b/a = 1/c
Now multiply both sides by a
b = a/c

You would get 6/12 = 3/6, or 1/2 = 1/2.

You take the reciprocal of both sides and multiply by a.

But that's two steps.

You can get a by itself in one step (multiply both sides by b).
Is there a parallel way to get b by itself by doing something to both sides with a?

Is there a way to do it in one step the way you can do something in one step with b to move b to the other side and get a by itself?

Multiply by b/c.
