The ancient Sumerian texts said there were 300 Annunaki in the heavens, and 600 underground, so given the long history of various cultures across the planet describing an underworld, journeys to the underworld to meet giants, and so on, it's often asserted they either died out or went back underground.

It is now known that there are in fact such cave systems in the Urals, Ozarks, and all around South America.
