This is a restatement of the First law of Thermodynamics. Something (mass or energy) cannot be created or destroyed.

If the total energy of the universe is zero, i.e. the mass-energy content of the physical universe is negated by some other force or means (maybe gravity), then "nothing" would have ever existed as that which does exist is cancelled out somewhere in the universe.
