plug in any values for both
(theta 1,2,3) & (a,b,c)

that's what I've been thinking. It is easy when d is inside the 3 positions but I want to solve for this case as well.
I've read that you can determine the distance with signals using the d=v*t
where v is velocity of signal and t is round trip time
no idea what the velocity of a ping packet is however and if it's constant

I think I'd have to create two triangles from the other point.
solve for the triangles they create inside the blue triangle
then use system of equations to solve for the outer orange ones.

If you mean you can plug in any values for the knowns then that was exactly what I intended you to do.
In a real world triangulation problem these values would have concert values and there would only be one solution given the device position.
On the stipulation that the position is within the limits of signal radius.
