You guys know me, I've posted here before. I have an English degree and work at an engineering company writing legal documents. I get paid an average of about $200 an hour because you can't allow engineers anywhere near legal documents.

I'm fucking sick of the constant bashing I get from scientists about how unimportant and stupid humanities are until you beg us to write your documents for you because you never learned to do it yourselves.

The competent ones can only make a marginal difference at the high school level.
If a kid has a difficult home situation or a family that doesn't value education, the teacher's competence doesn't really do much.
At some point, high competence makes them overqualified and they should either be teaching in college or working in industry.
