i wish i had done marine science. maybe then i could spend all day with a bunch of broads in a costal laboratory instead of a cold office building with smelly chinese dudes. i really did pick the wrong major.

I left the field because the job market in Australia is fucked and I hate smoozing and networking to get jobs.

Moved into consultancy as a a data scientist (what a meme) and then wound up being a SME on a massive ocean plastics engagement.

Can confirm marine science is full of women, a good percentage of which are hot. University was very fun ;)

I don't know too much about chemical, but Geo can be pretty interesting. If you get your PhD the research trips to get samples and shit are cool. Without the PhD there isn't too much on the job market though

From what I've seen, the areas with women are usually the animal related ones. Most of the women I know that went to undergrad for Marine Bio said something along the lines of "dolphin trainer" or "SCUBA" was why they were interested. If you're working on boring stuff like oceanography I doubt you'd be coming across as many women.

That sounds more like aquaculture rather than marine science, though there is overlap.
And the future is here already with large scale fish farming (especially salmon) as well as algae cultivation in Japan, Korea and other places.

That sounds relieving. Researching the culture of algae to feed fish or the culture of fish to feed humans is something I'd like to get into. Don't know if it's worth going deep into academia as a scientist or just being a technician grunt learning the practical technique. It seems like a biological science that is actually useful and fulfilling.
