"readers" are the equivalent of all the materials a teacher would normall pass out in class for the whole semester (like articles and power point slides).
Professors usually do not receive any money from "readers", it is a service provided to professor by the bookstore so that professors are not running several hundred copies off of pages every other day in the department office.
