The sad part is you're right, but in the wrong way. Those "dark occultists" exist, but they exert control through simple mass psychological warfare on easily manipulated normies. None of that other mystical shit works.

Women survive through passivity. Having their tribe destroyed by a more fit tribe isn't always the end for them. If they're lucky and can adapt quickly, they could be absorbed, and gain access to potentially more fit men in the process.
Men (from a historical, average perspective) bet everything on their home tribe and culture. They needed to form rigid beliefs based on what they observed to work best, and defend those beliefs viciously.
So women will parrot bullshit if it's pushed on them a little bit, while men are more critical once they form an internal model of the world they find to be consistent.
