i literally have schizophrenia

why do i exist. why didn't natural selection filter out my ancestors. i don't see any evolutionary benefit to this at all i'm basically half a potato. yet here i am, alive in the year 2020

there isn't one but evolution is really messy and driven by random chance. random drift is especially strong in a species like humans that have had a low effective population size for most of our recent evolutionary history

Well the obvious conclusion is it's not genetically deterministic. You probably have early childhood trauma combined with a certain manner and degree of neuroinflammation / other physiological problems. Clean up your diet, mind your antioxidant status (vitamin C flush, NAC / sulfur compounds, etc), try various herbs, look for a mechanical cause like problems with your cervical spine.

Also bear in mind you can condition schizophrenia into susceptible individuals. Source, I dis it. Forgot there was anything to come back to and forgot the ways, had to drag my way back to perceptual control and functionality, it took several years. inb4 "you're still schizo", no. I know better than you do.

it's a spectrum, heterozygotes get an advantage in creativity/divergent thinking, enough to pass on more copies of their genes, perhaps as successful artists, and balance out the full blown schizos, who usually do not reproduce

Assuming it's an actual physical thing and not purely psychological: Because it doesn't have a 100% inheritance rate and the carriers of the genes that would cause it are still able to survive and reproduce fine, and also when genes are configured that way they aren't configured some other way and the other possible ways they could be configured might lead to even worse things happening than just having some random grandchild with schizophrenia.
Assuming it's purely psychological: Nothing is wrong with you physically and your mental problems are just one way someone can get tripped up by the possibilities made available to them with their mind and its capacity for abstract conceptualization that goes beyond what most non-human animals would ever bother with engaging brain processes towards.
The more power and utility a tool has the more dangerous it can be. In order to be powerful and useful you have to open the door to all the unwanted and counterproductive possibilities that added power is exposing you to. Sort of the same idea as having the "unsafe" keyword to allow for execution of code outside the CLR in .NET languages.
