It's hard as fuck to develop batteries as dense energetically and with the same output as our current ones. Lithium ion is at that sweet spot of just being good enough for regular use and cheap enough to manufacture. There's a million different ways to actually store energy though, I'm sure someone will discover at least one better way in the future, though I have no idea what that will be.

I don't know. Your best bet is recyclable fuel storage or something like that. Battery cells have limited life, while they do have a long life, they wouldn't be sustainable for a house. Maybe if you could develop a system that diverts extra power to a redox reaction with H2O and collects the hydrogen in a fuel cell or something.

What about synthesising ammonia or Methane or something liquid?
diesel is around 36MJ/KG

That lies under fuel cells, you'd have to look at the changes in enthalpy of those reactions with oxygen.
