Based on studies done and quoted, we came to the conclusion that the point of the hymen was to protect young girls(particularly baby girls) from bugs crawling up there or other weird debris getting in or near the cervix. This was before the introduction of swaddling clothes to keep babies wrapped up the elements, /environment.
As an adult or older kid, they wouldn't need that protection.
It wouldn't make sense as a marker for virginity since it can be broken without sex and it wouldn't suddenly make the female any less fertile. Why would our own ancestors or any primate decide not to mate with a perfectly fertile female just because her hymen isn't there? What's more important is she is healthy, she isn't on her period, and she's ovulating.
The festisization of hymens as some important symbol for virginity was social that probably followed the focus of enforcing chastity on females to ensure paternity of children and thus tansfer of property under a patriarchal system.
