i just think of it like this. a year from today is january 7th 2021.
6 months would be june 7 2021 then, because in roughly 6 months time we will be in july.

Jan 7- Feb 7= 1 month
Feb 7- March 7= 2 months
March 7- April 7 = 3 months
April 7 - May 7 = 4 months
May 7- June 7 = 5 months

June 7 is 5 months from now.
