Most monkeys are pretty smart. And if you incentive them with food, I'm sure they'll perform tasks for you. Since they're so smart and have hands, monkeys can do complex tasks that most dogs couldn't do. Of course, that doesn't mean you can train monkeys to herd sheep or protect the house.
As I said, it depends on what training you want to give them. People use dogs, because they can be used in a lot of different ways.
