I've seen companies with data science positions when they actually want an analyst to just make basic statistical analysis
Like many have said, it's a merge of statistics and computer science brought together because of "Big Data".
There is real merit in it, there is a lot of hype, and there is also bullshit.
Currently, honestly Data Science is "hot" because companies will want people to run some basic pretrained models that work out-of-the-box in the future for a variety of tasks. So if there are more people going into the field, companies can lower the salary they are willing to offer.
Sorry, but If you are getting into DS because it sounds catchy, you will be no better than a code monkey.
Now there is a lot of actual cool stuff, mainly in the machine learning department.
Computer vision, NLP, Reinforcement Learning, fields with unstructured data have gotten a massive boost with neural networks.
However, in regards to jobs again, they've began to specify stuff. As
