Ashkenazim are, in general, overrepresented in positions of power and accomplishment at most levels of society in the United States and much of the West. For the most part, it can be explained by the fact that Ashkenazi Jews, on average, have an intelligence quotient that is higher than non-Jews. This is especially true for their verbal reasoning. However, even when you control for IQ, they are still somewhat overrepresented.
Jews are historically known to act in an ethnocentric manner in whichever nation they inhabit. It's biological fact that humans are predisposed to favour those with perceived common ancestry. This preference is obvious at the level of family; however, most evolutionary biologists would agree that this extends to ethnicity and race. Thus, it'd be safe to say that the Jews, to some degree at the least, practice in nepotism - even if not fully consciously. This would be true for most ethno-racial groups, however, given the ethnocentric spirit of Jews, it could be a significant variable here. There are other factors such as culture - perhaps an appreciation for intellectualism and whatnot, that could prove to be variables.
I guess one way to figure this out would be to look at non-Ashkenazim Jews, such as Sephardim, who do not possess the same cognitive abilities as the former. Are they also overrepresented in a similar way? I haven't looked into this yet, so maybe one of you pus/sci/s can do the research, if you're interested.
