Think about going outside and looking at the horizon. It's not a place you can ever get to, because the horizon is just where the earth bends away from you and you can't see it any more.
The event horizon is the same thing, its where space bends to the point that you can't see over the edge without jumping in yourself.
Shit also gets weirder when you realize that it doesn't behave like a three dimensional object, but a 2D one. When you increase the mass of a black hole the density increases as a product of surface area, not volume. The more massive black holes gets the less dense it actually is.
But really, unless you want to actually learn the math behind it you're going to be stuck operating with a series of really messy analogies that are going to cause problems when you try to merge these analogies together intuitively.
