What is meant by x number of standard deviations?

I know how to take the standard deviation of a set of numbers. What is meant when they say two standard deviations?

What was the standard deviation for your set of numbers? Going two standard deviations from that direction means going a quantity away from the mean that is equal to the numerical value of your standard deviation.

Take the red in pic related. The standard deviation is ten. So two standard deviations is 20.

Things are often talked about as being "x standard deviations from the mean".

Take the blue. A value of 150 is one standard deviation away from the mean.

And for the red, a value 70 would be said to be a value three standard deviations from the mean.

So for your example, 1,2,3,4,5 with SD=1.414
Two standard deviations would literally just be SD*2.

a standard deviation is a set percentage away from the mean. 68-95-99.7 rule

68% of people fall within 1 standard deviation of the mean. 95% between two. 99.7% between three.
