Subject says it all.
The best years of my life wasted, stressing over data that only 20 people will ever read.
The worst part? Absolutely no fucking jobs. Unless I focused on a super specific industry material (semiconductor crap) or medical shit, there's nothing available.

If it works for engineering undergrads applying to fields outside their immediate area of education, it can work for you dude.

If you don't want to go into academia because all academic positions available to you are shit, that really says more about you than academia. I don't know anyone who was smart/capable, yet had to deal with the grind of academia to the degree you're suggesting. They don't all make that much money, but you make it sound like your path landed you in the same position as a liberal arts student.

For other physics PhD in the thread I figured I'd post some resources for non academia type jobs. Getting a job in academia is quite hard because of the saturation. Even getting an instructorship is hard nowadays. However there are still many options in industry for physics PhD's, especially if you know a little bit about coding.

You might have a look at the thread at physicsforums: "near the end of a phd and have no job" post number 505903.I found this to be informative.

Data science is also still a field that is unsaturated, but you need a PhD to get a good job in it. If you are close to finishing your phd, think about applying to the data incubator, or insight. If you don't want to do a fellowship, you can maybe do some courses on coursera, and then apply to more junior jobs.

You can also think about government type jobs. For example, NSA will hire you if you can do well enough on a test similar to the mgre and pass their security screening. Check out the job description by going to their careers page and searching 1137753.

I hope this helps. Towards the end of a physics PhD it seems like your world is closing in around you because the standard path is very saturated, and you have very high expectations for yourself, but the situation is not so bleak.

Why are they wasted? Didn't you have time for anything besides work?

I doubt that 20 people will read it (unless you count your proof-readers for typos etc.)
But why does this matter. Didn't you like your subject?

I wouldn't go to do a postdoc/academia, for the job-competition reasons you listed. As a PhD, you're a student and can fuck around (literally and figuratively), but I thought doing a postdoc would expose me to a stupid level of publish-and-perish competition

Academics are disconnected from the realities of society, the ever accumulating debt can inspire them to bury their heads in the sand and hope/pray that it will work out, corps only care about what you can do for them.

Im only now finishing my masters in optics and have a part time job in one nat lab on the side and im literally being daily spammed by fucking headhunters on linkedin and even facebook from semicond., laser, optics or optoelectronics companies.

but that's fucking wrong. I work at most 4 days a week 8 hours a day. The rest of the time I play vidya and fuck gf. I also get paid well above average monthly sallary for this. I would actually lose money if I got a "real" job lol.

Getting tenure is pretty hard these days. 3 or 4 rounds of post doc lasting 2 or 3 years each is not uncommon. That means many remain a post doc for 10+ years while their warlord profs are using you as cheap labour and then refuse to credit the post docs on the patent applications.
