Is there any validity to treating bacterial infections by promoting the growth of a different, more benign type of bacteria? Would that even work?

E coli can be re-engineered using synthetic biology to basically target known cancer therapies towards tumors better, like this investigator is doing:

So is this the bleeding edge of where the pharmaceutical industry is heading? Antibiotic resistance is becoming a problem, so will doctors start prescribing different strains of bacteria instead?

For antibiotic resistance, I think bacteriophages are the future, which are actually a type of virus.

In general, biologic drugs are the most exciting technology in my opinion. Small molecules are great tools, but I think most of the low hanging fruit has been plucked by now.
