As a tradesman I would give up everything to go back in time and attend proper college or university.
I guess it depends, some people are better suited for office jobs and other to be tradesmen but if one makes wrong decisiom then I imagine its far worse for someone suited for office to become a tradesman than vice versa.

I'm sure that economically, trades can sustain a middle-class lifestyle which is all that a university degree was invented to do, so it matches. I'd say the only issue is the prestige associated. Being middle class for fixing someone's plumbing is less interesting than being middle class for managing the R&D department at General Motors.

I have a buddy who made and installed cabinets. He did it for almost 20 years. He can't any more because his back gave out on him. Now he's unemployed with 3 teenage kids and a wife who's working at a retail job to support them.

I wouldn't trade my job as a law assistant with a 4 year degree in literature for my friend's nearly 20 years of building cabinets to save your life.
