I have 1000 gallons of water that due to organic activity has had the pH lowered to say 3. I am trying to figure out how many gallons of a stock alkaline hydroxide solution at a given pH, say 14, it will take to neutralize the water. Any idea how to figure this out mathematically?

Get the concentration of H+ from the pH and calculate how much OH- you need for pH 7. Then that's how much base you need.

So this is what I have but i'm getting an answer that doesn't make sense.

volume of acid * molarity = v base * molarity

x * 10^(-14) = 1000 * 10^(-3.5)

31622800000000 gallons....

don't know how chemistry works but something like ((10^-3*1000)+(10^-14*x))/(1000 + x) = 10^-7

Not quite how it works. Each OH- neutralizes one H+. A fast estimate can be obtained by assuming that you can neutralize a strong acid with the same number of moles of a strong base.

So V_A * H_A = V_B*OH_B will give you a good guess, assuming it's not some weird buffered thing. H_A and OH_B are the number of moles or concentration of H+ and OH- in each solution.

pH 7 is neutral, which should let you ignore any volume effects. Might have to worry about dilution if you're shooting for a different pH.
