I actually have a LOT of optimism for it. I genuinely think we'll not only have Lunar Gateway up and running but a permanent moon base, at least for the foreseeable future.
Now that said, it'll probably end up being like ISS where more efforts into space (like, say, a permanent presence on Mars), just wind up stagnating because of politicians. That is, unless SpaceX is successful at getting and staying there.
