How so? I'd say that basic algebra is steeper. Somehow throwing letters into things loses half the population. Set theory tends to only get taught to people who have demonstrated that they can follow along using abstract language. But the way you build those abstract mathematical language skills is traditionally with basic algebra. People who get lost at "let x be a number" are never going to move beyond to "let A be a set and let x be an element of A".

The whole thing can quickly turn into a mess, and lose sight of which elements are in which set, especially when dealing with a bunch of family of sets and indexed family of sets.
Then there's also an issue of whether your using the correct variable when analysing sets, thinking about whether to use the same variables.

There's just more to think about and juggle when doing set theory.

I unironically think it was pretty fucking hard to do statistics involving set expressions... The basic theories which defines different sets aren't that hard though,
but combining it with statistics.. ugh
