Bigger question is what happens if it works as intended, and the kids have HIV immunity for life

From what I heard last of the story the mutations to the HIV gene weren’t the type that gave immunity, but were just other random mutations to it.

Probably because we dont have the full picture and most likely he was more of a project leader than anything.
Other personnel carried the experiments he was just an over watch.
In all was a probe to see how the public will react.
On MIT website there is article that got a copy of the paper in English and they review it.
Only problem they have with it is that they see few "off target" modification which I think they are not accidental at all(but they do) and they think the HIV gene was not changed enough to prevent infection.
Only reason it was not published was the media hysteria and fear that the publishers will louse reputation over it.
Nothing more nothing less,I expect a bright future with gene modification.

My uneducated guess would be that IF this was a government operation no one would have known, or this guy did some serios shit on his part of an unknown other secret operation wrong, so the government kicked him out and made sure he wouldn't be able to do anything anywhere again.
It's not quiet likely that he was involved in a secret program, because they would have killed him or any witness off. At least that's the most safe thing when you are doing some hardcore Frankenstein level science, if you don't want to get Russia and the USA involved too. Maybe just got some information of a friend that was involved in something and thought: Hey, I can do this too, thats easy.

Actually isn't it more like, trying to raise the chance of immunity to a certain disease by an unknown degree with an unknown chance of failure and unknown chance of causing other mutations, defects and unknown risks?
Too many unknown variables involved at once with too low amount of subjects so it's not quiet scientific?
