The atmosphere is 71% nitrogen and 28% oxygen. Does this mean that every breathe we take is the sane composition as the atmosphere or does its gases coalesce as layers according to it’s density?

Yes, I know it can kill, but I was just wondering do we have to breathe a certain ratio of nitrogen to oxygen to live. I know the answer to my first question is most likely the former, but I was just curious as to why the air we breathe doesn’t organize itself by layer according to it’s density. I know it’s a dumb question, but could you humor it, in less of a derogatory way at least.

Yes. Ratios can vary but there are upper and lower limits. Idk what these limits are

The nitrogen is oxidized to nitrous oxide, which is what you're really breathing. The ratio is precisely correct to prevent too much oxygen from being present, which would oxidize your cells and cause them to radicalize into cancer cellulars. This is why climate change is so dangerous and cancer is rising in children, who breath the most oxygen, since it is closer to the ground due to higher density.

Two things:

Nitrogen does not interact with your body. If you breathe 100% N2 you will die from oxygen deprivation. The same with helium, and many other gases. So no, the gas does not poison you. The same cannot be said for oxygen. If you breathe 100% Oxygen from extended time periods you will damage your cells and most likely develop a complication that will kill you.

The density of N2 and O2 are almost the same. O2 is slightly denser however. They are mixed in the atmosphere, no doubt about that. Wind does most of the job.
