not really 'natural', but I guess you could argue that it exists in the natural world. It may also have emergent properties/bugs which the programmer did not have knowledge of, and in that sense is just a very contrived physical system (i.e. a relatively complex computer programme) and so studying it has some original merit.

we could, in our own universe, find the 'source code', i.e. work out all of the fundamental particle interactions and the behaviour of space and time. Does that make the emergent science, such as statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, meteorology etc. any less scientific? No. Although the emergent properties of a game are more limited, they do exist.

I mean him and his buddies are basically taking measurements and performing experiments on a particular system and deducing from those measurements how it works and what might be possible within its limitations, demonstrated via further experimentation. That's a scientific process if you ask me
