What's the evolutionary purpose of pitch discrimination in human hearing? It seems to be completely useless in pre-modern conditions yet we somehow have the capacity to distinguish sounds a fraction of semitone apart and produce them ourselves. This takes up a significant chunk of auditory processing that the brain does so it's a costly ability to have. Plus tone deaf people seem to function just fine without it.
