I've worked mainly in electronics.
I worked with a young engineer who didn't seem to know the difference between 'positive' and 'negative' on a power supply, reverse-biased one power rail on a SoC, did their test anyway, and when I tried to explain that they could have fried the test unit that way, they acted like I was making something out of nothing.
I've worked with engineers who, if it wasn't 100% digital, were virtually lost.
I've worked with engineers who couldn't tell you how to build a crystal radio without going to look it up on the internet.
I've worked with shitloads of engineers who, if their car broke down on the side of the road, would be utterly helpless and need to call a tow truck. The same ones couldn't even so much as change their own oil or do a simple brake job, they'd have to take it to a mechanic.
Very few engineers I've worked with could solder worth shit. They're always the ones who wreck perfectly good tips, and make a hatchet job out of the simplest PCB work.
The best engineers I've worked with were multi-talented across multiple disciplines and were true makers-of-things, from original concept to finished product, including firmware/software, mechanical, linear, digital, and RF electronics, they could do it all, and usually had worked as technicians while they were in school. Not too many of them around anymore but they were always the best to work with.
