In Halo fiction, the FTL drive uses higher spatial dimensions (slipspace) to travel distances in real space shorter than sublight.
There does exist the theory of Warp Drive (named after Star Trek's FTL). Alternate to Halo's slipspace, this proposes the act of compressing space ahead and decompressing behind, allows for FTL travel; avoiding travel exclusively in higher theoretical dimensions. It may even work at sublight which is neat.
