Energy is a relationship of potential motion between objects. But objects are made up of energy, which is a relationship between objects. This feels like some tautological bullshit, where one definition references another definition. What is actually going on?

It's not a physical thing. The facts about energy, especially the way it converts between many different forms (kinetic, gravitational, chemical and so on) so that you can get 99% of it back again is a hard-won scientific truth that took a whole lot of theory and experiments to figure out.

If you want the very basic historical introduction to it, look into analytic mechanics. Where Newtonian mechanics is the study of motion (of planets) in terms of speed, acceleration and so on, analytic mechanics is the study of motion in terms of energy instead of speed/acceleration. It gets you the same results by a sometimes-simpler method. Required course for physics majors usually.

that's the only thing you need to know in order to understand classical mechanics.
quantum mechanics aren't solved yet and they aren't observed (much harder to understand) and they barely have any use in real life so you are better off skipping them for now

Consider the consistent observation that physical objects in the cosmos have a resistance to acceleration that is directly related to the atomic weight of those objects, and the surrounding gravitational field intensity.
There is a lot you should intuit about the nature of energy and mass just from that observation.
Like what is the source of inertia, what is gravitation and electromagnetism, and why this is the most coveted information in the cosmos.

Matter is just what happens when energy is welled into depth. Universe is infinitely deep, and positive energy expands, so an atom will stick around as long as it can draw up energy from that well, which can theroretically last forever.

But its far crazier than that. The Universe is infinitely deep, and if you were to shrink down to an atomic scale, time would accellerate as you go into smaller scales because of how lightspeed is tied to scale, and as time accellerates for you the atoms rotation would slow down and you would see what it actually is... atoms, bros... atoms are mother fucking galaxies. Not metaphorically, literally. And galaxies are atoms to larger scales.
