Space Rider got significant funding and the go ahead in the latest ESA budget, mainly due to Italy. Space Rider will fly on Vega and Avio who build Vega’s SRB stages are an Italian company, so the Italian delegation always blow the majority of their grant on funding Vega-centric proposals.

It’s much cheaper ($75-90 million vs $165-220 million for the A5) due to changes in manufacturing and integration and has slightly better overall performance than it’s predecessor, it also has a new hydrolox upper-stage that can restart, allowing direct to GSO missions. The biggest visible/external change is the addition of the P120 SRBs, which are also being used as the first-stage of the Vega-C rocket.

...which will become utterly redundant once SS/SH is flying, because the order of magnitudes drop in cost per kilo to space will enable the US to utterly destroy everyone else on any important metric. Honestly, the whole independent access to space thing becomes irrelevant when the US is for example colonizing Mars whilst ESA manages to put up a few satellites here and there. Any strategic argument is moot because the US will have absolute control of the high ground

If Starship does become a big hit in spaceflight, then it wouldn't be unreasonable to imagine that ESA could swiftly develop their own type of Starship. It's not going to be revolutionary overnight, so there will be time for them to work it out.

Well, before SpaceX Ariane had basically no competition in low cost launches. The Soviet Union was dead and Shuttle was an expensive failure
I think there is a graph somewhere with the number of all launches in the period
