Basically it seems that the cerebellum is the thing that orchestrates everything, the cerebral cortex is basically as somebody said above, the number cruncher that does things you learned and mastered, like tying your shoes, and so on.
It used to be thought it is the opposite, that the cerebellum does the number crunching for things like precise motions, becuase people with damaged cerebellum cannot move smoothly, but otherwise seemed fine on the first sight, until somebody noticed the people are basicly just stuck doing their daily routines and such on autopilot, but it's nobody there.
