What are the actual prospects of solar/wind replacing coal? From what I understand they're not even close to matching the efficiency and flexibility of fossil fuels at the moment. Wouldn't it be more viable to focus on nuclear power so we can replace fossil fuels and after that transition to renewables?

Coal is getting gradually replaced by wind and solar for more then a decade now, full replacement will take at least another decade
Nuclear is not an option. Simply because planning and building a nuclear plants takes at least two decades. If it becomes operational all coal plants are already gone.

I don't think any one viable energy option should be removed/replaced. Instead I think it needs to be made "cleaner" in its mining, production, manufacturing, waste, and use. That goes for all standard and alternative fuel & power options. There is a shit load of energy out there in many forms. Some of them are simply not viable enough to replace certain aspects and use of other forms. Thus, match the correct technology to the right power generation source and ensure all energy manufacturing is as "clean" as possible across the entire board.
