Scariest medical procedures

So I learned last night that there is a medical procedure known as a Hemicorporectomy, or in plain English, a translumbar amputation.
Basically, it is the surgical removal of the body from just above the pelvis.
It is safe to say that it is the scariest thing I have ever learned about in my entire life. It fills me with a terror that can only be described as primal.
As far as I can tell it has only been done maybe 60 times in recorded medical literature, and roughly 1/3 of patients pass away during or after the procedure. *But* should they survive the surgery, receive regular and proper medical care, and take care of themselves, they can live a natural lifespan.
Is this the granddaddy of all medical procedures?
What are the most disturbing surgeries done that you have ever heard of?
