Isn’t the spine absolutely essential for agile movement? Why does it have only the simplest form of spine? Do they not want to make it more agile because it may scare the public?

It's not strictly necessary, in fact you can still walk and do things in a tight corset.
To add spine flexibility would complicate design and cost considerably.

yes of course you can still walk but can you quickly change your direction you’re facing? i feel like without the hlep of the spine it’s very slow and awkward

A flexible spine can help shift your center of gravity and also affect rotational inertia but that's about it. It certainly helps humans be more agile but biped robots can accomplish that in other ways. What's slow and awkward for humans can be done by robots very quickly and with phenomenal precision.
