You do peer review because you want to keep bullshit out of your field. But that wouldn't lead to many papers published so to increase revenue, publishers apparently decided to just ask random people for peer review and here we are, having to replicate every paper you read.
Some industries got so tired of it that they don't bother with journals anymore and only trust research coming from labs they sponsor, which also isn't very wise but at least the labs have some incentive to also produce some volume of non-bullshit research.
