How does one calculate between-group variance for two independent populations? I can mainly only find how to do this within each group.

Can you give the step-by-step or a link?

The only thing I found that mentioned it said to use the mean of the two populations' standard deviations, but it sounded incorrect to me and the person admitted there were errors in the video. (Usually variance refers to a SD squared.)

Like, if you're making a heritability estimate on a phenotypic trait between two groups, you'd need to use the means and other relevant data to come up with the variance between the groups. Apparently this is possible to do, but the instructions online are scant.
