I'm working on a design that would require a large cantilever(5m) occasionally for maintenance. The assembly will have guides and bearings that I have to select and aluminum or steel depending on what is required. Anyway, I've drawn some crude FBDs, pic related. I'm wondering if supporting the work (squiggle region, main load) as shown in 2. would reduce the maximum moment in the main structural element and the reaction forces at the support rollers(dots), as compared to 1?
