It's "hard" for most people because ironically they overthink it; everything in math can be arrived at from simpler concepts (1+1+1+1=2+2=2*2=2^2=...), but that process of traveling from simpler concepts to more complex ones is tedious and requires that you not fuck up at all on your way (try counting to one million without skipping a number by mistake).
