cybernetics will outpace human evolution easily. evolution's objective function is gene propagation, it is "focused" on maximizing reproduction not optimizing individuals beyond that. so traits such as intelligence, etc are only optimized to the point of where it benefits reproduction and not beyond that. hell it may be more beneficial from this darwinian perspective to be dumb and have lots of kids as we see today.

Not just that but we also may compete with strong AI, or we merge with both. Immortality and experience may give us an edge until the posthumans truly have out competed us. Still in that day I will be a proud parent.

No safe neural cybernetics will exist because it creates scar tissue and essentially renders that area of brain dead. No "brain uploads" work the way you think they do, because you will never leave your flesh body, even if a shitty digital copy continues to live on in a server or robot.

The truth is this: the universe has already crafted the most complex nanomachines in the history of all things, and the magnum opus of all this technology is the human being. To this end, the future lies in the advancement of biology. Synthetic Biology, Regenerative Medicine, and everything in this realm.

To answer OP's question, no we will not need machines to improve ourselves. There will always be a better solution to the same problem without machines, just like how having a new kidney transplant is better in every way to remaining on dialysis.

Machines have their place. Cybernetics could be useful for some things like wireless communications, simple calculations, memory storage, etc. The purpose of current research in the space right now is to create soft implants which can stimulate nerves repeatedly without frying them, and receive signals. To say that it's impossible to create a seamless implant is like saying it's impossible to fly in the past. It hasn't been done yet, and it's difficult, but it could be done in the future. Neuralink is already doing lots of experiments in rat models, and even if electrical implants fail, there is still the whole field of optogenetics to work with.
