I don't remember exactly too much about it, but basically, we never found out why the embryos die at a set number of days. Obviously, there's something the mother creates that the embryos need to stay alive that has yet to be discovered.
Regardless, there are laws against trying to go past that number of days now. However, we've had artificial wombs for animals for over 50 years now. The second biggest problem is preventing infection.
