>>11229891The dark age is a meme invented by british historians in the early XIXth century because Britain experienced a lot of turmoil from the end of the Roman Empire up to William the Conqueror, it did not apply to 90% of the rest of Europe. They pretty much recycled the narrative of the french revolutionary 100 years before who themselves repeated the trashtalk of the Renaissance authors.
This concept is widely mocked by french and german medievist who all agree that western and northern Europe experienced an economic and societal boom during the middle age compared to Antiquity.
The "dark age" is literal pop history propagated by people with no knowledge of the period.
>Oh i like this game. Can we compare Christian rule to Greek and Roman rule? Whos civilization was longer lasting, more equitable, and accomplished more with less? The roman civilization was absolutely ruthless, you never read just a single history about the romans if you think they were "equitable" lol. The roman society was rooted in 3 castes: the patricians who owned absolutely anything
- the plebeians who owned nothing but a vote to elect a tribun and couldn't compete economically and were impoverished by the tsunami of slaves
- the slaves who worked in the farms of the patricians and were not much more than domestic animals to them
The greeks were not much better even though they tended to have less fascination for blood sports.
Finally the fact is that Europe experienced much more science and technological discoveries during the Middle Age than Antiquity. The roman era was absolutely stagnant on this aspect.
