Just because it wasn't done in a lab doesn't mean it wasn't gene edited.
We deliberately picked the more attractive species for our needs over ones we did not.
Those being high-yields, seedlessness, particular colors, shapes, consistencies, etc.
I get where you are coming from in that modifying genes in labs can cause some unintended side-effects, but we understand a great deal more these days than we did in the stupid ages.
These days we can predict quite well what happens, and the eventual outcomes of those edited genes are well documented.
The problem is scummy companies like Monsanto that are the hiding shit.
We're nowhere near ready for modifying hugely complex beings like humans, but simpler plants are fairly easy. (those CRISPR babies will be fucked, well one of them at least)
