2) no. I work in the field and "supremacy" vs "advantage" have come to mean two different things. Supremacy refers to an exponential speedup. Not just that, but as one where the classical computer could not perform the algorithm within any reasonable fraction of the average human lifespan. The actual problem may or may not have any practical use.
Advantage, on the other hand, refers to a speedup that is not necessarily exponential. It could just be quadratic, e.g. Grover's. Or it could be exponential but from something like n to log n (see Brayvi, Gosset, and Koenig, Science 362 2018). It is a fundamental, qualitative speedup, but not necessarily as dramatic as supremacy. But it's typically a useful, practical problem which has a quantum advantage, e.g. chemistry calculations or more accurate simulation (as opposed to classical methods, like QMC or DMRG or DFT).

Anyway, do they have a point? Yes, but only because they made it one. This letter's existence is a self-fulfilling prophecy. People can't just be decent human beings, they have to constantly find something to be offended about, to be upset about, to make a fuss about. It's fucking annoying and disgusting.

Yes, """progress""" should be """impeded""" to make sure we actually understand the algorithms we're implementing and the effects they will have on society. We already have cases where people have had their lives ruined because an algorithm determined it to be the case and no one could explain why. You're essentially arguing that QA is evil because it impedes the progress of computer science.
