Energy is what is being stored. You can store energy in many, many ways. Chemical batteries can store energy. Energy can also be stored in the form of gravitational potential energy, like in the water stored in a water tower or behind a dam. Energy can also be stored in the potential energy of a spring, or in the magnetic field within a solenoid. It can also be stored in the form of kinetic energy, like in a flywheel, which is very common. Does that answer your question?
